What is the role of Diwali in India?

Festivals are very important in our lives.  It removes the dullness in life and gives a feeling of joy.  Deepawali is also one of such festivals which fills happiness in life.  Deepawali means 'row of lamps'.Many festivals are celebrated every year in our country.  Eid, Deepawali, Rakshabandhan, Onam, Vijayadashami are prominent among these festivals.  Many castes celebrate these festivals with great fanfare in India.  Deepawali is prominent in these festivals.  This festival is a famous festival of Hindus.

When and how Diwali is celebrated?

This festival is celebrated with great gaiety every year on the new moon day of Kartik month.  People get their houses, shops whitewashed, painted and decorated with pictures etc.  Beautiful dishes are made in homes on the day of Deepawali.  People light lamps on their houses, walls and gates, but now the light bulbs have replaced lamps.  Deep garlands on the high atticals all around the city embellish it as if the heavens of the heavens descended with the Mars-urn to greet the earth.  People also worship Lakshmi on this day and night.  They drop firecrackers, burn sparklers and enjoy various types of fireworks.

Stories and beliefs behind celebrating Diwali

There are many stories and beliefs related to celebrating Diwali.  It is said that on this day Lord Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile.  The people there lit lamps in this joy.  Swami Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj and Mahavir Swami, the founder of Jainism, attained salvation on this day.  The sixth Guru of the Sikhs, Govind Singh, was also freed from prison on this day.  Some people say that on this day Sri Krishna killed a demon named Narakasura.

What are the benefits from Diwali?

Apart from the above mentioned religious reasons, another important significance of Deepawali festival is that this season is also suitable for cleaning the houses that have become dirty due to rain.  Kharif crop also comes in the house on these days.  This new grain is a symbol of splendor.  Therefore, Lakshmi is worshiped only with paddy spices.

What are the harm from firecrackers in diwali?

People fireworks on Diwali.  This increases air and noise pollution in the environment.  Sometimes a small accident results in a very big accident.  So if fireworks are not used, it is good.  On this occasion many people lose a lot of money in gambling.

This festival gives us the message of truth over untruth, non-violence over violence and victory of virtue over sin.  We should try to remove ignorance in the form of light by illuminating our minds with the knowledge of the light of the lamps.  Diwali reminds us that good triumphs over evil.
